Matthew, Morgan hold off late charges to capture Woodford Legends Invitational title

(LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY – June 8, 2024) – Catriona Matthew and Becky Morgan slept on a one shot lead last night and turned it into a three-shot victory this afternoon as they bested a field of LPGA Legends in the inaugural Woodford Legends Invitational at The Woodford Club in Versailles, Ky. The pair combined for a two-day total of 26 under par in this unique two-person scramble featuring a field of 28 former LPGA Tour stars joined by 12 talented area women amateurs.

“I holed a lot of putts yesterday and it was Becky’s turn today,” said Matthew, as she and Morgan both captured their first title on the senior circuit with the win at Woodford. “Becky holed most of the putts today,” added Matthew, “Apart from the 9th green, the last green we played was the only one we missed over the two days, so we once again just combined really well together.”

Matthew and Morgan carded two eagles on the back nine on their way to posting their second 59 in two days and matching the winners of the amateur division, Laney Frye and Claira Beth Ramsey, who opened with a 61 and closed with the tournament low of 57.

Claira Beth Ramsey and Laney Frye win low amateur team honors.

“On 17 we had long putt for eagle, and we saw that the ams were at 26 and we were at 24, and I had a sneaky feeling that Catriona was going to hole it,” says Morgan, “And she did.”

Despite a slow start yesterday on the front nine, Michelle McGann and Laura Diaz birdied seven of their last nine holes to vault themselves into contention in the opening round. The pair played five shots better in the final round today, carding a stellar 58 that included 12 birdies and an eagle to lock in runner up honors at 23 under par.

“Michelle is an incredible partner,” says Diaz. “We started a little slow yesterday, but we had a much better pace today – and we hit it closer all day.”

“We both can roll the rock,” says McGann, “so we came out here with the attitude of let’s just try to make 18 birdies. Laura made so many putts. I tried to place my drives to free her up to hit bombs. We both just hit a lot of good shots, but unfortunately the putts started falling for us a little too late.”

The team of Sherri Steinhauer and Lisa DePaulo slipped to solo 3rd after following up a first round 60 with a final round 63. For final scores, please visit http://legendsofthelpga.com
