GRAPEVINE, Texas (May 30) – Angela Stanford won the Ewing Automotive Group Legends of the LPGA Division at the Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open after lengthy weather delays. The Championship has been shortened from 54 to 36 holes for both the Legends and Championship Divisions, with only the Legends Division completing 36 holes on Thursday. Play in the Championship Division will resume at 8:00am tomorrow morning at Grapevine Golf Course (Pecan/Mockingbird nines).
Stanford carded rounds of 66-71–137, to finish the shortened Championship at 7-under-par and win by a margin of four strokes.
With three holes to play, Stanford only had a one stroke lead. “I purposely didn’t have my phone on and watch the leaderboard,” she said. Birdies on the final two holes were enough to get her back to the four shot lead that she started the day with. “I just tried to do my best down the stretch and thankfully it was enough.”
Speaking on the event and Grapevine Golf Course, Stanford said, “I liked it…it’s tricky, it seems like it’s open out there, but it’s really not. I was so happy to hear that we are here for a couple years. I’m thankful for this opportunity at home and to be at the Texas Women’s Open.”
This is the second year that Fin Ewing III and the Ewing Automotive Group have supported the Legends of the LPGA Division and made a separate $75,000 purse possible. “He loves golf and he loves women’s golf. We need more people like that in the world. I really appreciate Fin for everything that he does for golf in general and specifically women’s golf,” said Stanford about her relationship with Ewing. Stanford heads back to Fort Worth with $13,500 for her victory today. Both Ewing (2019) and Stanford (2020) are members of the greatest state golf hall of fame in the country, the Texas Golf Hall of Fame.
A six hour and 15 minute delay caused by inclement weather interrupted play at 10:00am this morning. After resuming play shortly after 4:00pm it was once again suspended due to darkness at 8:23pm.
The Championship Division will resume the final round tomorrow morning. The leaders tee off at 8:27am. 2015 Champion Maddie McCrary still holds her one stroke lead at 6-under-par and will chase her second Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open title.
